Furutaka modernisation and useful old cruisers

Furutaka's rebuild turned six single mounts into three twin 8-inch turrets while retaining screening, torpedo, and seaplane functions.

Notes

The Furutaka class illustrates how extensively an early cruiser could be transformed after entering service. Replacing six single 7.9-inch mounts with three twin 8-inch turrets produced a battery comparable in arrangement to the later York class. Two quadruple 24-inch torpedo launchers supported the battle line, while two seaplanes on one catapult supplied useful scouting capacity. Losses at Cape Esperance and Savo Island show that these extensively rebuilt, roughly 16-year-old ships remained operationally useful in 1942. The Royal Navy's unmodernized Hawkins class shows how different that modernization policy was.
