Furious uses two flight decks to keep fighters moving

Furious's lower flying-off deck is designed to launch light fighters while strike aircraft are being arranged above.

Notes

The unusual arrangement solved an operational problem. Short-takeoff fighters could stream from the forward hangar while the main deck remained occupied by a strike, preserving emergency fighter launches. This reduced the risk that arranging a large attack would leave every fighter trapped behind aircraft on the main deck. The concept ceased to work as fighters became heavier and required more takeoff distance. Furious shows the priority placed on simultaneous fighter cover and strike preparation, along with the way aircraft growth could invalidate a sound layout.
