Reconnaissance range and forgiving carrier handling

The Fulmar's observer, endurance, folding arrangement, low stall speed, and ship-launch provisions served a navy that treated reconnaissance as aviation's first task.

Notes

Royal Navy aircraft had to find and track an enemy fleet as well as fight, especially when night strikes depended on accurate location reports. The Fulmar combined a pilot and observer with the endurance needed for long searches and strike escort. Its design distinguished carrier acceleration from catapult launch aboard other warships, with separate fittings for each method, and also provided arresting, folding, and hoisting arrangements. A 56-knot stall speed made recovery more forgiving when an aircraft returned damaged or without full engine power.
