Fubuki firepower versus stability

Fubuki's formidable guns and torpedoes are weighed against topweight, sea-keeping, and the unused freedom available before treaty limits tightened.

Notes

The Fubuki class combined six five-inch guns with nine 24-inch torpedo tubes, giving it formidable destroyer firepower. Severe topweight made the ship a poor weapons platform in moderate or heavy seas. The proposed remedy is an estimated 200-300 additional tons, with beam increased from 10.4 metres to roughly 11.4-11.5 metres. Increasing overall length from 118.41 metres to about 126 metres would preserve the length-to-beam relationship for speed and handling. These are suggested design changes, not the dimensions of an actual rebuild. The ships were designed before the London treaty imposed its specific destroyer limits, so the Washington treaty did not force such a cramped hull. The guns and torpedoes lost much of their value when the hull could not provide a stable fighting platform.
