The name frigate predates the later cruiser role, although the design made that role possible. Frigates needed enough armament for economic warfare, enough speed and range to hunt prey, and enough maneuverability for reconnaissance and blockade work. Early globalization supplied the strategic driver: Spanish and Portuguese wealth moved through exposed ocean routes while their strongest naval forces remained concentrated in Europe.

Frigates became cruising ships because global trade routes gave navies valuable targets, vulnerable supply chains, and distant stations to patrol.
