Type 26 shows why a primary mission is not an exclusive mission

Type 26 combines an anti-submarine design priority with weapons and aircraft useful for air defence, surface warfare and shore support.

Notes

Anti-submarine warfare determines the capabilities that a Type 26 design must protect when compromises become necessary. Its surface-to-air missiles and gun can contribute to task-group defence, while the gun also supports operations ashore. Anti-ship missiles and a multipurpose helicopter add further uses, alongside control of uncrewed surface vessels and aircraft. Planned long-range strike weapons extend that versatility. A primary mission governs which capabilities the designers preserve when accepting compromises elsewhere. Larger destroyers generally have more room to protect two principal mission capabilities, although size and national classification complicate that comparison.
