Damage control combines people, redundancy and supporting systems

Different survivability approaches place different demands on crew size without removing human responsibility for damage control.

Notes

The US Navy's relatively manpower-intensive approach to damage control draws on a large personnel pool. Other navies place greater emphasis on system redundancy and equipment that helps people fight fires and control damage. Human leadership remains part of both approaches. Neither philosophy is ranked as inherently superior here. Supporting systems can suppress a hazard, reduce unnecessary exposure and buy the crew time to respond, while people retain responsibility for dealing with the damage.
