More frigate orders need a credible production timetable

An order added to the end of a slow production run can promise a larger fleet without providing ships when they are needed.

Notes

Additional frigates would have little near-term effect if the existing build rate remained unchanged. Ships added at the end of the run could arrive as late as the 2040s. Such promises leave later governments to fund and deliver a programme announced by their predecessors, and those successors can change their minds. A larger nominal order therefore needs a credible construction timetable. Accelerating production is part of providing useful hulls when the expected operational need arises.
