Frigate-led uncrewed groups and future fleet commanders

Mixed frigate and uncrewed formations could restore a flotilla-style command experience while still requiring people to maintain the smaller craft.

Notes

Historical destroyer flotillas gave a captain experience directing several ships with a staff before promotion to higher command. A frigate leading a group of uncrewed vessels could offer a comparable form of operational responsibility. This is a forecast about possible career development, rather than an established promotion system. The personnel requirement would also extend beyond remote operation because the smaller vessels still need maintenance and repair. An adapted amphibious ship could provide sheltered facilities for that work. The resulting formation would combine command at sea with a support organization able to keep its craft operating.
