French services choose opposite sides of the license

France fields both sides of the S-55 family, with its air force buying the American H-19 while its navy selects the British-built Whirlwind.

Notes

The Sikorsky H-19 and Westland Whirlwind were closely related, but French procurement still split along service lines. The French Air Force operated the American-built Chickasaw while the French Navy chose Westland's British license-built version. Separate service preferences were enough to produce different purchasing decisions within substantially the same aircraft family. Service identity could shape defense acquisition even when the available machines were close relatives.
