Why longitude mattered differently to French and British fleets

Accurate longitude helped mission-focused French ships complete their assignments and helped British ships find opponents they wanted to fight.

Notes

The French confirmation of Harrison's chronometer helps explain why both rival navies valued accurate longitude. French operations are characterized here as mission-oriented: moving troops or completing another assignment could take priority over accepting battle. Efficient navigation therefore helped French ships transit and maneuver while avoiding unwanted interception. The Royal Navy also needed exact position, often as part of finding and forcing an engagement. The same navigation instrument served different operational priorities in the age of sail.
