Chapter ยท 10:29-13:21

French fleet quality and the fast-battleship distinction

The French Navy is assessed as a capable, well-led ally whose Dunkerque-class ships were fast battleships, not battlecruisers.

Notes

France fielded useful forces in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean, with generally capable leadership and well-designed ships. The Dunkerque class is distinguished from battlecruisers because speed and relatively light main guns do not erase a design's battleship role. Its armament reflected what French industry could build rather than an attempt to reproduce the classic battlecruiser tradeoff. Continued Allied access to North American industry could sustain 13.5-inch ammunition or, with more difficulty, support rearmament to a British caliber.
