French destroyers in a Mediterranean speed competition

French destroyer design pursued speed against Italian rivals, raising the question of how well the ships could screen a fleet.

Notes

Large, fast French destroyers resemble Formula One machines here: impressive speed, but less tolerance for damage and competing demands. The ships had a plausible mission in scouting for the Dunkerques, yet the question remains what they were equipped to escort or protect. Against Italian torpedo destroyers, gun power mattered because a screen had to hold off the attackers before they reached the protected force. Royal Navy practice instead emphasized a balance of guns, torpedoes, anti-aircraft fire, and anti-submarine weapons for several screening roles. In this interpretation, competition with Italy and national pride in speed pulled French designs away from that broader balance.
