Standardized fleets versus French and Russian experiments

French one-off pre-dreadnoughts and more coherent Russian designs illustrate why fleet homogeneity mattered as much as headline armament.

Notes

France's succession of differing ships is set against the logistical value of repeatable classes whose machinery, weapons, and spare parts could be supported together. French experimentation produced useful technical ideas but poor fleet-wide consistency. Mixed French main and secondary calibers also complicated long-range fire because observers had to distinguish different shell splashes. Russian ships could also be one-offs, yet examples such as Ekaterina II used a more coherent heavy-gun arrangement and attracted serious Royal Navy attention.
