A forty-year production span makes one class serve several eras

More than forty years separated the first keel from the last commissioning, making adaptability as important as the original mission.

Notes

Nimitz was laid down in 1968, while George H. W. Bush entered service in 2009, so design evolution occurred inside the class as well as through refits. The open hangar and reconfigurable air group let the ships support combat, counterterrorism, search and rescue, and humanitarian relief. George H. W. Bush also became a prominent test platform for uncrewed naval aviation, showing how a later hull can incubate capabilities not imagined when the first ship was designed. That flexibility helps explain why the class remained useful while the strategic setting changed and why its final ships may serve well into the middle of the twenty-first century.
