Cruisers, a light cruiser, and a sloop

Three Japanese heavy cruisers confronted HMS Birmingham and lightly armed HMS Folkestone, creating a sharp imbalance in firepower but a dangerous diplomatic tripwire.

Notes

Three Japanese Myoko-class heavy cruisers, led by Ashigara, faced Birmingham's twelve six-inch guns and Folkestone's single four-inch gun. Each Japanese ship carried five twin eight-inch turrets and a substantial torpedo battery, producing a severe imbalance in fighting power. Folkestone was militarily weak, which made her politically useful: an attack on a small Royal Navy sloop flying the White Ensign would be difficult to dismiss as an accident. With one British hull on each side of the merchantman, any resort to violence would become a clearer act of war.
