Why Force Z sortied against the Japanese landings

The sortie followed the Royal Navy's pattern of accepting high risk to relieve hard-pressed ground forces and attack vulnerable invasion shipping.

Notes

The Japanese advance was outmaneuvering Commonwealth forces whose senior command lacked relevant experience. Against that crisis, a high-risk naval intervention was consistent with the Royal Navy's conduct at Dunkirk, Norway, Greece, and Crete. The sortie was therefore an attempt to relieve hard-pressed land and air forces, not a departure from the service's wartime behavior. Sinking transports and stores ships offered a real operational payoff because the Japanese land campaign was already constrained by food, water, and ammunition.
