How much does Force Z's fate change if both capital ships can sustain 33 to 34 knots?
Short answerThey might outrun the edge of the Japanese strike's range, but faster King George V-class ships would also alter earlier events at Denmark Strait.
NotesThe attacking Japanese aircraft reached Force Z near the limit of their fuel, so a faster force farther south might escape interception. The design change also reaches backward: a 33-knot King George V class could have reached Denmark Strait in time to reinforce Hood and Prince of Wales. Two modern battleships with Hood would create a very different engagement against Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. The speed change therefore affects more than the December 1941 sortie.
