Singapore's Catalina reconnaissance shortfall

A small Catalina detachment at Singapore illustrates how insufficient reconnaissance coverage can limit naval decisions and strike operations.

Notes

The Singapore example turns aircraft range into a force-structure problem: No. 205 Squadron had only three Catalinas in December 1941. A counterfactual force of twelve additional aircraft illustrates how much more coverage might have been available against approaching enemy task groups. A larger patrol force could have supplied more information and improved commanders' options. The same search problem shaped the options for Force Z and for Vildebeest and Albacore torpedo-bomber operations, all of which depended on finding a target first.
