Boeing 314 range from a water runway

The Boeing 314 Clipper demonstrates why water remained useful for very large, long-range aircraft even in commercial service.

Notes

The Boeing 314 Clipper's luxury routes are a civilian expression of the same infrastructure problem facing naval aviation. A large aircraft could take off from water with a weight and range that would have been difficult to accommodate on an unprepared land surface. Its roughly 38-ton takeoff weight and modified maximum range of 4,258 nautical miles show why a flying boat could become a practical intercontinental platform. Water distributed the aircraft's load like a hull's displacement, allowing exceptional size without a matching network of long paved runways.
