Flower corvettes: slow but handy convoy escorts

The Flower class traded speed for convoy-compatible endurance and manoeuvrability, while variable machinery made individual ships perform differently.

Notes

The nominal Flower-class figures are roughly sixteen knots and 3,500 miles at twelve knots, enough to accompany merchant traffic but too slow for fast-warship work. Their short, broad hull form favored manoeuvrability over speed. Reports of twenty knots remain hard to verify, while eighteen knots appears credible for some ships. Wartime builders fitted whichever suitable engines were available, and engineers could coax different performance from individual ships. Published class figures are therefore a baseline rather than an exact measure of every corvette.
