Enterprise took in fighters from both American carrier groups so they could be refueled, rearmed, and returned to the defense. Warning of a second Japanese wave forced her to stop landings at 10:00 and maneuver against the approaching attack. Launching and recovering aircraft required a suitable course, which restricted the carrier's ability to evade bombers. Fuel-starved aircraft therefore had to ditch near escorting destroyers. USS Porter rescued an Avenger crew but was struck by a torpedo during the rescue. Its origin remains uncertain in the account: a ditched aircraft is suggested, possibly a Japanese one. The damage forced USS Shaw to sink Porter with gunfire.

Flight-deck operations constrained evasive maneuver
Enterprise had to stop recovering aircraft before the second attack because a carrier cannot simultaneously hold the course needed for flight operations and maneuver freely against bombers.
