More Sumner firepower within nearly the same hull dimensions

The stated gain of 20 percent in main-gun armament and 50 percent in light AA offered additional combat power alongside the numerous Fletchers.

Notes

Sumners retained the same weapon types and fire-control approach as Fletchers while increasing the number of guns. The stated gains over the Fletcher were twenty percent in 5-inch armament and fifty percent in light antiaircraft weapons. The hull retained the same length, with fifteen inches more beam and fifteen inches more draught. The design sought extra combat power for a relatively modest increase in cost and size. That gave the fleet a more powerful general-purpose destroyer to use alongside its larger Fletcher force.
