Why naval aviators need a direct engineering voice

Interwar British naval aviation suffered when operational needs had to pass through several organizations before reaching aircraft engineers.

Notes

Interwar British naval aviation had to send operational requirements through the Admiralty and Air Ministry before they reached aircraft companies and engineers. Technical answers then traveled back through the same institutions, creating repeated opportunities for delay or mistranslation. Returning the Fleet Air Arm to Admiralty control placed aviation engineers and operational officers inside one service conversation. The shorter route connected future aircraft development more directly to the needs of task-group commanders and flying units.
