Five twin turrets limit the loss from one hit

The Royal Navy's five-twin layout keeps four-fifths of its main battery after one turret is disabled and uses a proven mounting.

Notes

The five-twin British layout is a survivability choice rather than simple attachment to an old arrangement. One disabled turret removes two of ten guns, leaving 80 percent of the main battery available. Twin mountings also offered a proven step beyond single-gun turrets, while a workable triple could provide more guns if the hull and weight allowance permitted it. Turret count matters because it controls how sharply a ship's fighting power falls after damage.
