Part of HMS Dreadnought's turret layout followed Jackie Fisher's interpretation of the Battle of Lissa. He wanted six guns able to fire forward, which helped put two turrets on the wings. Fisher also considered superfiring arrangements technically impractical, even as other designers began to adopt them. The ship's layout combined a historical lesson with contemporary engineering judgment. It was one answer to the all-big-gun problem, and later designers chose other arrangements.

Lissa's legacy in Dreadnought's turret layout
Jackie Fisher's reading of Lissa encouraged six-gun forward fire, while doubts about superfiring turrets helped produce Dreadnought's wing-turret arrangement.
