These ships make more sense as first-class cruisers than as idealized armored brawlers. Their speed and presence suited convoy protection, rapid imperial movement, raider hunting, and early reinforcement alongside fast British capital ships. In the proposed Far Eastern role, they could use the same fuel points as the Royal Navy, enter Singapore with Hood, Renown, and Repulse, and push forward before the slower battle fleet arrived. Their eight- and nine-gun arrangements preserved a recognizably French balance without simply cramming aboard the maximum possible armament. Built for French missions rather than as copies of Britain's County class, their mobility, protection, and firepower form a more coherent design.
