Built in Finland for Finnish waters, Ilmarinen and Vainamoinen combined diesel-electric machinery with four 10-inch Bofors guns and eight 105-millimeter guns. Their fore-and-aft main turrets and diamond-arranged secondary battery allowed six of the smaller guns to bear from any attack angle. The layout illustrates how an archipelago navy could emphasize all-around local firepower instead of long range or fleet speed.
