Keeping 15-inch guns saves weight throughout the ship

Retaining the proposed 15-inch/50 armament saves weight in the ammunition, barrels, and handling equipment of a treaty-limited battleship.

Notes

Britain could retain the 15-inch/50 in another generation of fast capital ships if the F3-derived arrangement had proved satisfactory. Moving to 16-inch guns remained an option, but the smaller calibre offered cumulative weight savings. The ammunition allowance, gun barrels, and ammunition-handling equipment would each be lighter. Together, those savings make continued use of 15-inch guns a plausible British choice while the American and Japanese designs move toward 16-inch armament.
