At least four main guns and a quintuple torpedo launcher push the nominal 1,500-ton design over its allowance almost immediately. Reducing speed to 33 knots does not cure the deficit, while stripping weapons would remove the capabilities that justify the ship. The Tribal class displaced roughly 1,884 tons standard and 2,560 tons at deep load, a much wider gap than the treaty number suggests. The result shows why declared standard displacement is a poor measure of a destroyer's complete seagoing weight.
