Chapter ยท 6:01-7:26

California and Galaxy classes: crew, redundancy and mission standards

A fictional starship comparison explains how crew numbers affect damage control and why survivability requirements must reflect a ship's mission and size.

Notes

The fictional California and Galaxy classes allow a comparison of ship design without the national loyalties that can dominate arguments about real navies. In the analogy, the Galaxy's larger crew contributes to greater redundancy, damage control and the ability to adapt when circumstances change. The California's lower redundancy does not by itself make it a bad design, because it has a different job. Standards need to fit the size and scope of that mission and ship. Common expectations for safety and survivability still matter, with their application adjusted to the vessel. The starships illustrate the reasoning without establishing the capabilities of any real warship.
