When an escort requirement becomes a picket requirement

Carrier-group compatibility and robust independent operations brought picket-like expectations into the FFG(X) requirement.

Notes

FFG(X) was expected to keep up with carriers, contribute sensors to the fleet tactical picture, and operate with strike groups or surface action groups. It was also expected to defend itself robustly during independent operations while remaining connected to the fleet. That combination is interpreted as a move toward a picket role resembling an Arleigh Burke's position on an outer screen. A picket supplies sensor coverage and contributes to the task group's defence while standing apart from its main body. Holding that station does not necessarily mean surviving entirely alone. The distinction matters because a dispersed picket faces different demands from a frigate working within the formation.
