What 'father' signaled in Roman political language

A fictional leadership dispute leads to an explanation of 'father' as deference to an elder's authoritative wisdom rather than a literal family claim.

Notes

An example from Rome's wars with Carthage explains why calling a leader 'father' need not describe kinship. In the patrician interpretation offered here, the title marks an elder whose wisdom is treated as authoritative. A subordinate may disagree while still being expected to act within that elder's guidance. This provides a possible reading of the Emperor's relationship with his subordinates in Warhammer 40,000. The comparison distinguishes deference to authority from a strictly familial use of the word.
