Should a fleet keep seven-percent-light-speed weapons to build more ships, or adopt ten-percent weapons?
Short answerFavor the faster weapon for capital ships and carriers. A smaller destroyer weapon is useful only if it fits the ship and enough crews exist for the additional hulls.
NotesCheaper or smaller weapons can support a more numerous fleet, but additional hulls still need trained crews. The proposed compromise keeps an adequate older weapon on destroyers while giving capital ships and carriers the faster system. Greater projectile speed also shortens the target's time to respond at a given distance, even if maximum range stays the same. A later clarification says that even the smaller new weapon is too large for destroyers. Under that constraint, the choice concerns capital ships, for which the faster system remains the preference.
