Falling flak can complicate a torpedo approach

Fragments from an air-defence barrage could fall into the sea and force an incoming torpedo to approach below the debris field.

Notes

Flak creates a secondary hazard after its immediate air-defence job is over. Gravity carries metal fragments into the water, placing debris along the surface approach used by a torpedo released from the proposed missile. The fragments may be less damaging to a torpedo than to a missile, but they could still interfere with the weapon. A torpedo may therefore have to run deep enough to pass below the falling field, adding another constraint to the combined missile-and-torpedo attack.
