Britain's 1982 task force sailed without a conventional cruiser for the first time in more than a century of comparable distant deployments. Hermes was an aircraft carrier, and Invincible's political label as a through-deck cruiser did not make her a traditional cruiser. No dedicated large ship therefore combined flagship work, independent endurance, and general-purpose escort in the familiar form. The absence exposes an institutional gap between the fleet's official ship categories and the command-and-protection functions the campaign still required.
