How much better off would the Falklands task force be if its Type 42s and Type 22s had close-in weapon systems?
Short answerSome missile and bomb attacks would be defeated and coordination errors reduced, but the limited number of fitted ships prevents a total transformation.
NotesSingle incoming missiles give Phalanx or Goalkeeper a useful opportunity to intercept weapons that have penetrated the outer defences. The systems would also threaten aircraft approaching closely enough to drop bombs. Some Type 42 and Type 22 losses would therefore be less likely in this scenario. Confidence in a ship's own close defence could also prevent the manoeuvre in which a Type 42 crossed a Type 22's firing line while the latter was resetting its radar. The effect is limited by the relatively small number of those ship types in the task force.
