When Falklands radio traffic reached Germany instead of HMS Fearless

A Falklands anecdote illustrates how high-frequency propagation can send a message far beyond its intended nearby receiver.

Notes

A unit ashore reportedly tried and failed to reach HMS Fearless by high-frequency radio. The same transmission was heard clearly in northern Germany because atmospheric conditions carried it along an unintended path. The German receiver then relayed the information to the ship by satellite communication. The story makes radio propagation a concrete operational problem: nominal range does not guarantee that the intended station will hear a signal when and where it is needed.
