Falklands helicopters turned the task force into a distributed air system

Sea Kings operating from carriers, auxiliaries, and escorts shifted between ASW and transport as the Falklands campaign exposed both distributed strength and the cost of missing AEW.

Notes

The Falklands task force functioned as a network in which carriers coordinated aircraft, stores, maintenance, auxiliaries, and frigate-led ASW sectors. Helicopters launched from different decks could enter a common operating pool and be assigned to the sector that needed them. When the Argentine submarine threat proved smaller than expected, Sea Kings could be reassigned from repeated searches to urgent lift duties. That flexibility became especially important after Atlantic Conveyor's loss left only one of the embarked Chinooks available. In this assessment, helicopter AEW would have deepened radar coverage, reduced the Argentine opportunity to reach the force, and allowed the carriers to operate farther west with more freedom of position.
