Falklands capability gaps and the Vulcan legacy

Airborne early warning, helicopter lift, amphibious shipping, and long-range bombers show how pre-war force choices constrained the Falklands campaign.

Notes

The Falklands campaign exposed the lack of airborne early warning and limited space for helicopters and light armour after Britain's carrier and amphibious forces had shrunk. Port Stanley's runway appears to have remained usable despite the Vulcan raid, although the heavy bomber may still have had psychological value. The RAF had tied the V-force closely to the nuclear mission, leaving long-range conventional strike without a durable institutional case once Polaris took over deterrence. Possible replacements such as the F-111 or B-1 remained unrealised, so earlier force choices had removed useful options before the next crisis.
