Beachhead logistics constrain the advance

Helicopters, landing craft, vehicles, and repacking capacity determine whether supplies can move from ships through the beachhead to front-line units.

Notes

Once ashore, British forces discover that light tracked vehicles can cross more Falklands terrain than prewar reports suggested. Naval planners had brought a limited number despite Marine doubts, reasoning that they could at least defend the beachhead if they could not travel inland. A D Company account from Sussex Mountain describes four or five days in limbo without medium-term objectives while commanders assessed Argentine moves and supplies accumulated. At the same time, helicopters and landing craft are consumed unloading ships, leaving fewer assets to move troops and supplies forward. Pallets arriving from sea must also be broken down into useful front-line loads. Tanks and other combat systems have little value without transporters, fuel trucks, ammunition vehicles, and distribution capacity.
