Fairmile C: the motor gun boat arrives

The 1941 Fairmile C marks an explicit move into the motor-gun-boat role, with pom-poms, machine guns, Oerlikons, and depth charges replacing the earlier subchaser emphasis.

Notes

The Fairmile C was armed around two-pounder weapons and multiple machine-gun mounts, later gaining more 20 mm Oerlikons and depth charges. Its crowded armament answered the new requirement to put sustained fire onto enemy fast craft. The manually trained Rolls-Royce Mark XIV was insufficiently fast-firing for the role, while the Mark II pom-pom proved much more successful. Only 24 were built because the design served as a wartime bridge to the Fairmile D. It never became a large production class in its own right.
