F-35Bs for outer air defense and gray-zone identification

Japan intended its shipborne F-35Bs to extend outer air defense and identify ambiguous contacts before a task force had to decide whether to engage.

Notes

Japan's F-35B plan emphasized organic outer air defense for naval task forces while retaining a strike capability. Aircraft operating from modified Izumo-class ships could approach an ambiguous contact and obtain visual identification before an engagement decision. That matters in a gray-zone encounter where the same radar profile might indicate a missile carrier or an innocent airliner. Waiting until a ship could visually identify the contact could allow a hostile aircraft close enough to launch a mass missile attack. The logic resembles the Royal Navy's original Invincible-class concept, which provided limited outer air defense and strike capability. Timely identification can reduce the chance that a defensible precaution creates a wider crisis.
