Why the F-35B fits Britain's flight-deck problem

For Britain, F-35B flexibility matters more than the F-35C's higher technical performance because more compatible flight decks improve availability.

Question

Should the UK have chosen the F-35C instead of the F-35B?

Short answer

No. The F-35B better supports a wider set of British flight decks and therefore a more reliable carrier-air capability.

Notes

Britain cannot afford separate carrier-aircraft fleets or enough large carriers to guarantee continuous availability. Two Queen Elizabeth-class decks leave the force one maintenance problem away from having almost no carrier option. Three future landing helicopter docks with ski jumps could raise the total to five decks able to operate the same F-35B fleet. An LHD could then serve as a light carrier for air defence and airborne early warning when both large carriers were committed or unavailable. The F-35C may offer stronger technical performance, while the F-35B gives Britain more compatible decks and therefore more reliable strategic availability. That advantage still depends on buying enough aircraft to equip the ships when required.
