Twelve F-35As add a nuclear role but weaken carrier growth

The F-35A purchase is assessed as a small dual-capable nuclear force drawn from aircraft previously expected to strengthen the carrier-capable F-35B fleet.

Notes

Twelve F-35As would leave eight available aircraft even under a generous two-thirds availability assumption. The order substitutes for planned F-35Bs, reducing the aircraft available to support the carriers. It also creates a distinct support burden because the two variants do not share every component. A training squadron would have to sustain nuclear-strike proficiency alongside its conversion work. The proposed weapons would come from the American stockpile supplied to NATO, rather than a new British stockpile. A separate, larger purchase could offer a more substantial capability, but twelve dual-role aircraft are judged too few to justify the added complexity.
