How would British County and York cruisers change if they used the F3-style all-forward layout?
Short answerThey would be more powerful cruisers, but their all-forward silhouette could make long-range identification and threat assessment much harder for an opponent.
NotesThis design only follows logically if the wider F3 battlecruiser premise already exists. At long range, an opponent could struggle to judge whether it sees a cruiser close by or a much more dangerous ship farther away, increasing uncertainty before an engagement. Nine forward 8-inch guns would give every County- and York-type hull a full-strength heavy-cruiser battery rather than the reduced York arrangement. Common silhouettes across capital ships and cruisers could complicate identification, but the all-forward layout also ties the cruiser program to a much broader alternate Royal Navy design philosophy.
