The F125 mismatch between size and air defense

Germany's 7,200-ton F125 combines a large hull and 127 mm gun with the same short-range RAM arrangement as a much smaller corvette.

Notes

The large Baden-Württemberg class is compared with the far smaller Braunschweig corvette. The F125’s 127 mm gun and anti-ship missiles give it useful surface firepower, but two RAM launchers provide essentially the same missile air-defence arrangement as a corvette one-quarter its displacement. This fit reflects the post-Cold War assumption that major combat would occur only by choice, leaving a large ship with little ability to absorb a demanding air threat. For presence work, that mismatch undercuts visual credibility before the ship has made its diplomatic case. StanFlex spaces could have allowed Germany to buy a lighter peacetime fit while retaining an easier path to Sea Sparrow modules in a crisis. Displacement alone cannot establish cruiser-level combat capability.
