The fighter competition that seeded later designs

The Navy's fighter contest drew proposals whose concepts and descendants continued to influence American combat-aircraft design long after the F-8 won.

Notes

The Crusader competed against Grumman's F11F Tiger, McDonnell's F3H Demon, and a navalised North American F-100 concept. Their ideas continued into later aircraft and role definitions even though they lost this contest. The Demon lineage helped lead toward the F-4 Phantom II, while Vought's enlarged Crusader development is compared with the later Hornet-to-Super Hornet relationship. The visual resemblance between Vought intake experiments and Boeing's X-32 illustrates how discarded ideas can return in a later procurement cycle.
