The fleet air-defense problem behind the F-14

The Tomcat is introduced as a Cold War fleet-defense fighter whose range, radar, and long-range missiles helped protect carrier groups before attackers could launch.

Notes

The opening places the F-14 in the larger problem of operating fleets near hostile coasts. Ships inside the land-based threat envelope need layered defenses and, ideally, a heavy fighter able to find and engage strike aircraft, electronic-warfare aircraft, and airborne early-warning platforms at long range. The Italian Navy's heavily armed Mediterranean ships provide a contrasting example of what surface forces do when they cannot assume that kind of organic fighter cover. The comparison makes the Tomcat part of task-group survivability rather than simply an aircraft-performance story.
