How a larger carrier changes Harrier operations

A modest increase in carrier hangar area can support several more Harriers and materially improve combat air patrol generation.

Notes

Hull length becomes usable hangar space, aircraft capacity, and sortie resilience. Expanding an Invincible-type design from about 209 metres toward 230 metres could yield roughly 600 square metres of additional hangar area after allowing for surrounding structures. A simplified spacing estimate gives enough room to maintain at least four more Harriers without relying on especially dense parking. Moving from an eighteen-aircraft force toward twenty-four makes it easier to keep fighters on combat air patrol and on alert while others cycle through maintenance. A modest dimensional change can therefore produce a disproportionate improvement in sustained carrier operations.
